What is your hairdressing background?
My hairdressing background began in 1964 when I was sent on a private 6 month course (which ended up lasting 18 months) at James and Peters School of Hairdressing. At the time it was very difficult to get training. For 10 years I worked in different salons for experience. During the strikes in the 1970s I opened my first salon, then next door became available which I opened a gents salon. Eventually I expanded to having 4 salons and a training Academy via youth training which lasted 14 years. Overall I have been hairdressing for 50 years and in business for 40 years. I am now self employed here at Darren Michael Hairdressing.
Why did you choose hairdressing as a career?
I chose hairdressing because of being a people person and wanting to make them look and feel good both inside and outside.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy being surrounded by different, interesting people and sharing experiences with each other. It’s good to talk about anything and everything as long as it is agreeable with all persons.
Who do admire in the hairdressing industry?
I admire all hairdressers who care about people and the career they have chosen in hairdressing.
